Summary
It’s only when it’s too late to salvage that Dess realizes her friendship with Asriel has been falling apart since her return.
It’s not that she hasn’t been trying. It’s that: after the dark and the deep, after a prophecy etched itself into her veins and across her eyes and burrowed deep into whatever her soul’s become, after what everyone tells her was years of being gone. After coming back half Dess and half something-else and entirely herself. After still wearing that form like a well-worn sweater, settled comfortably around her shoulders.
After everything, it turns out she and Asriel don’t have a lot in common anymore.
(On growing up and growing apart.)

Summary
“Didn’t think I’d get this far,” Kris tells Dess.
“Hey.” Dess taps their nose, and they peer up at it through their bangs, the vibrant brightness of her face. “I’m glad you’re here, harbinger. You’re going to figure this out.”
Kris hums, noncommittal. Somewhere halfway across the country their friends are finishing up final exams. A whole year out there, learning new things, living new places. So many things they’ve seen that Kris never has, never will. Certainly, their friends have traveled further beyond the bounds of Hometown than they ever have. Into some world that surely cannot exist. Some reality that doesn’t include them.
They know, of course, that theirs is a problem that can never be solved.
(When they’re ten years old Kris Dreemurr is shown a video by their mother. It is of a coyote that has been raised by a dog mother, with dog siblings, in a human house.)
On surviving your end and what comes next.

Summary
Cloud wakes up and doesn't know where he is. Not uncommon, alright, but, well - something's really wrong with his head this time, vision not lining up, the previous day's events empty, world seeming flat and distant, everything at the other end of a long tunnel - Barret says he has a concussion. He doesn't remember getting a concussion.
The little cabin at the foot of the glacier spins around him, the tug in his chest begs him to keep climbing, to just get to the glacier, and he sits somewhere between them and tries very hard not to move.

Summary
“Nearly there,” Hermione is telling him softly. “You’ve done it, Harry, you’ve done so well. We’re nearly there, and then you can rest.”
“Hell, you can check out now if you’d like, mate,” says Ron, with a lightness he doesn’t really feel. He’s counting Harry’s heartbeats, matching his breaths, compiling this proof that Harry came back alive because it’s so much a miracle Ron almost can’t believe it. “I’ll carry you to the castle like a proper knight, and everyone will be too impressed with your victory to take the piss out of you.”
“Ron, honestly,” says Hermione.
Harry’s shoulders shake, the ghost of a laugh, and then the woods don’t seem quite as dark.

Summary
Eventually, they find a note tacked to the gargoyle who guards the passage to the Headmaster's office. It is in Granger's handwriting and signed by her at the bottom, and tells them that, the danger being over and the initial aftermath winding down, she feels that the three of them need some time alone to recuperate and will reappear exactly three days from that day, at four o'clock.
