Summary
“Yeah,” Steve says, “Yeah. Of course. Yeah,” and then he listens for a while and says, “Sure,” and then he stands up and settles the phone back in its cradle.
When he turns to look at Billy, it’s like he’s been reset. His expression is completely blank. Steve’s so still that Billy wants to grab him by the shoulders and shake him hard, make him move. The silence seems to stretch between them.
Finally, Steve presses his hands together, begins to fiddle with his wedding ring that means nothing in the eyes of god or the state and everything to the two of them.
He twists and twists and twists it.
“I have to go to Hawkins. Something is back.”
~
Or: In the spring of 1988, Steve finally told Billy the truth. In September 1989, Billy finds out exactly how real the monsters in Hawkins are. They did lose the blues in Chicago, but Hawkins pulls them back in.

Summary
Steve has nightmares like this. Eddie hurt. Eddie pale. Eddie with blood around his mouth. Still like a dead body in hospital sheets. He has nightmares like this, but this isn’t a nightmare. It’s December 1992 and the person on the phone said critical condition.
Steve hasn’t spoken to Eddie since 1986, but the nurse on the phone called him, said come.
So he drove. Said he was his brother, of course, definitely. He signed some sort of form and put down his credit card because Eddie’s got no insurance and the man at the desk had suggested he wasn’t letting Steve back there without one. He’s not sure that’s legal. He’s going to look into it, but not now. Not when he has nightmares like this.
or: four days after Eddie’s been hurt and one day when he’s recovered.

Summary
Steve Harrington is staring at him again. Eddie frowns. Steve looks to the heavens like he’s praying for strength, “Rock stars, am I right?” he jokes to the crowd. “You going to tell us anything about it or just sit there remembering the moment?”
Asshole. Eddie feels like maybe his palms are a little sweaty. He’s not totally sure why he agreed to this. “It was like a lightning strike,” Eddie says. “She was so mean, and so talented, and the four of us started playing together and it just made sense.”
“Lightning strike, that’s the title of your new song, right? The one you’re playing tonight?”
“Yeah,” Eddie says eloquently. “Lightning, but. Yeah.”
Steve grins this time. “Well, lucky for all of us, we won’t need to be saved by a lightning strike from this amazing conversation. We’ll be back after this, folks, with more Corroded Coffin.”

Or: Every talk show host in the business has favorite guests. Steve’s just happens to be a little more his favorite than people were expecting.

Summary
Everyone in Hawkins wants to date Billy Hargrove. That was true before they knew he was an omega, back when he was still getting away with playing alpha.
Everyone in the entire state of Indiana, apparently, wants to date Steve Harrington and that? Is actually a huge problem for Billy Hargrove.
It gets him arrested, in fact, which turns out to be a huge problem for everyone.

Summary
Eddie has never been hurt before, in the dreams, except for when he was bones and the muscle and blood thing, but he’s hurt now. He’s shirtless this time, and he’s got on black pants and white sneakers--Steve wonders why Eddie gets shoes but not a shirt--and he’s got a long slash right down his ribs, like something with very sharp nails tried to slice him in half.
“Hey, Harrington,” Eddie says, his voice low and rough. “Thought you might be bad news coming through that door, but shit, I’m glad to see you.”
~
Steve dreams of Eddie with ease. Even remaking him for the real world isn't so hard. It's keeping him here, and the promise of a challenge, that's turning out to be the problem.
a post season 5 fix it.

Summary
“Make me,” Steve Harrington says, finally turning to look at him, his eyes dark and blank. He’s too drunk to hold a sneer. He finally gets a good look at Billy, though, and Billy sees it when it happens, when Steve recognizes him. Something in his expression crumples, a little, and then he’s on his feet.
Steve Harrington, Billy learns, as his world stays frozen, as the thunder booms, as he hears Rebecca’s worried little shriek from the other end of the bar, still can’t throw a very good punch.
~
This is a story where, after everything, Billy Hargrove healed. Steve did not.

Summary
When Steve gets outside, Billy’s up against the bricks at the far end of the bar. His lip is split and his nose is bleeding, and he’s going to have one hell of a black eye, Steve thinks. Billy’s got an arm curled around his ribs, too, and Steve knows enough about the way that Billy looks when he’s hurting to know that means he’s hurting bad.
~
Back in Hawkins for the first time since they broke up, Steve's drawn to trouble in two ways. The first way has to do with monsters. The second way has to do with Billy Hargrove.

Summary
Steve misses Billy the most on Sunday afternoons when the sun through his windows makes his room feel hot.
Billy had said they could leave together. Billy had wanted them to leave together. Steve had said no because maybe he chased it by staying here, where it all happened, where Billy died and came back to life and they shared a beer in the back of an ambulance driving away from the mall.

Then:
“What do you tell all these girls to get them to go out with you?” Steve asked as he dropped his cigarette and ground it under his heel.
Billy’s grin was sharp and easy. “Meet me behind the mall,” he said, and for a second, Steve thought that Billy was saying it to him.
Now:
“And you miss him,” Dustin added, his voice sounding even farther away. Steve kept his eyes closed and listened to Dustin sigh.“No I don’t,” Steve said. “I don’t miss him. I’m fine.”
(Then: March, April, May, and June, Steve and Billy meet behind the mall. Now: summer, fall, winter, and spring after the mall. Steve grapples with what he's lost and what comes back).

And Billy, curled in a cheap plastic seat with his eyes squeezed shut, wonders, could it really be this easy? Just get on a bus and go home?
(It isn't that easy).

Summary
Steve doesn’t realize it until July, until after everything has happened, but he’s known Billy Hargrove for years. He’s not sure how he figures it out. It’s sometime after stripping out of his destroyed Scoops uniform, but before scrubbing the blood off his face, before he digs into those bruises just hard enough to hurt. It’s not shocking or startling. It doesn’t knock him off his feet.
&
The red light turns green and Steve pulls through it. He’s looking straight ahead, out into the snow and the cold night air when he says, “He doesn’t remember.”
He hears more than sees El shrug again. “No,” she says finally. “But he will.”
-
Steve remembers something important, but just barely. He has questions. In December, he gets to ask them. Billy--in the same concrete room the doctors have had him in since July--has questions too.

Summary
“I left the number for the family we’re staying with in California if you have any problems, but of course, you know he doesn’t--do much,” she says, and the ending is almost careful, but not particularly thoughtful, “So if you need anything, you should call, we just couldn’t bring him, you understand, and I think it’s important that Max get a break after everything, and we just couldn’t bring him, you know, and--”
She’s still talking, but what she’s actually doing is walking down the crumbling steps, climbing into the passenger’s side of the truck, slamming the door shut, driving away, and--
And Max is yelling out the window, “She means like, two weeks--” before they’re turning around the corner and--
And Steve is standing on the front steps of Billy Hargrove’s house, keys jingling in his palm, thinking what the fuck?

Summary
Billy had been there, on the ground when the government people showed up, and then they’d looked back for him and he was gone.
And that’s what brings Steve out here. That’s what’s kept him out here, away from Hawkins, driving all around the country looking for the right real skyline, because maybe Billy had just gotten up and walked away, that night.

Summary
Billy doesn’t say goodbye. He thunders down the stairs, an approximation of what he used to be, thundering and loud and pissed and he knows that he has bigger problems than the boy he likes who doesn’t like him, but this feels like the biggest problem in the world, right now.
Maybe that’s reassuring. Maybe it’s nice that he’s wondering about a crush or whatever like some boring chick. It’s normal, at least. After the summer, almost nothing in Billy’s life is normal, so. Yeah. It’s nice. Maybe it’s just--maybe it’s just nice.
(It isn't).

Summary
Whatever. They don’t talk, is the point, and Billy doesn’t need to finish all these big, deep, tragic sentences in his head. He needs to know if Harrington can’t swim.
For lifeguard reasons. It’s his job, all right?

Summary
Steve wakes up--in a pool lounger--to Billy Hargrove looming over him. Billy pushes his sunglasses down and Steve thinks sleepily that it must be so that Steve gets the full impact of Billy’s narrow-eyed glare. “Harrington,” Billy says. “We’re fucking closed.”
(or, three times Billy doesn't let Steve touch the radio and one time he kind of does).

Summary
Steve can feel Billy’s eyes on him. “You should get here early,” Billy says, casually. “Tomorrow. At six.”
“You don’t open until eleven,” Steve says, pushing himself to his feet. He walks away before Nancy and Jonathan get back, feeling bleached and tired from the sun, from Nancy, from this whole fucking trip.
He doesn’t want some random surfer from California feeling bad for him or laughing at him or looking at him the way Billy had been. He doesn’t need that kind of energy in his life.
