Summary
Holden sucks his teeth as he racks his brain for things to say. “What else is there to talk about me? Because honestly, all I could think of right now is this case, since that’s what’s occupying my mind 24/7. And we surely do not want to talk about work right now.”
“Well, when you’re running out of things to say, you can always ask me what I’m wearing,” Bill says, matter-of-factly.
Holden lets out a big amused snort across the line, followed by a sudden burst of laughter, with Bill chiming in, mirroring his laughs, making the line distorted with static. He waits for a few beats to let Bill talk next, but all Holden can hear right now is the blood pulsing in his ears. He tries not to read too much into Bill’s silence but the unexpected tension surfacing in the middle of their call is hard to ignore.
Straightening up against the headboard, Holden tightens his grip on the receiver and dampens his lips with a quick lick before finally filling in the dead air. “Then, okay. What are you wearing?”

Holden couldn't sleep, so he impulsively calls Bill in the middle of the night, and their conversation over the phone takes an unexpected turn.

For a fleeting moment, their gazes lock, and something unspoken flickers. An acknowledgment of the inevitable. A surrender to their predetermined fates that night. Just like how most nights of them end.
Then, before Bill’s brain can catch up to what is happening, Holden is already kissing him. Or Bill is already kissing Holden. He couldn’t exactly tell who’s kissing who. Who started it. Who is encouraging it. All he knows right now is that his partner’s lips are moving as clumsily and as desperately as his.
Holden’s fingers then crawl up to the older man’s shirt collar. Bill feels the tight grip and instantly leans into his partner’s clutch, only for him to be pushed away. Bill’s eyes snap wide open, almost in disbelief that this time it is Holden who was the first to break the kiss.

Summary
Slowly, Bill sinks his face into his wife’s hair, nuzzling his nose deep into strands of her hair before inhaling deeply. He is expecting her usual hair product or at least the soap that she’s using would fill his nostrils. But, for some reason, Nancy doesn’t smell anything like Nancy.
He slowly opens his left eye to take a peek at his wife’s face. But instead of seeing a large mane of light curls, he finds waves of unruly dark brown hair prickling the underside of his nose. Bill’s other eye snaps wide open as he nudges the person in his arms away from him to take a good look at them.
The messy crown of hair belongs to a sleeping man who is still in his work clothes, minus the necktie and coat. For a moment, Bill is relieved that this person had mistaken for his wife is not a complete stranger. But he is immediately horrified to find out that the one sleeping beside him this whole time is Holden.

Bill wakes up from a nasty hangover and finds out that he shared the motel bed with Holden that night. Things get a little crazy from there.

Summary
Bill is very much aware that he is not a man of self-control, especially when Holden is involved. Even back then when his partner was new to the department, Bill always surrendered to all of his stubborn insistence, whether big or small. He initially thought he was just pitying Holden, giving the poor man a chance. Or maybe Holden’s idealistic views spoke to him, reminding him of his earlier days in the Bureau.
Or maybe Bill just happens to lose all rationality inside him once Holden looks up at him with his doe eyes and plush lips.
