    Summary

"Hmm?" Jinshi blinked, having forgotten she'd asked him a question, distracted by her actions.

Maomao pursed her lips to the ice cube fully, then brought it the short distance to Jinshi's. He inhaled sharply from the cold, but held still as she traced his own mouth with the quickly-melting ice. With a subtle press against the seam of his lips, Maomao silently encouraged him to open his mouth, and slipped the cube within, just enough for him to close his lips upon it without touching the skin of her fingers. "I said, shall I help you cool off, sir?"

Jinshi nodded, unable to speak as she intended, and swallowed thickly. From the corner of his mouth, dribbled a trickle of water that Maomao hoped was ice melt, and not drool. That would be too pathetic, even for him.

or, during the peak of summer, Maomao is summoned to help Jinshi cool down, but things inevitably heat up.

    Summary

Maomao isn’t a stranger to death. Those in her profession faced it almost every day, and if not the thing itself, then scares of it. She’s not unfamiliar with the process of guiding someone to their loved one’s deathbed. She’s not unaware of what happens next.

Still, she’s never understood why they say such… unnecessary things, when she leaves them alone. Everyone there knows that there isn’t coming back from this. That the time is limited. And yet, without fail, every time it happens, she hears:

“I love you. Please don’t leave me. Please stay.”

It's a sad fact of life that babies can die for any number of reasons. While Maomao knows premature infants have a very low rate of survival, she's not sure Jinshi is prepared for the reality.

    Summary

The carving on the jadeite was minimal but exquisite, from the hint of thick veins running up the shaft to the gentle curve of the proud head; its ridges and valleys a facsimile of life. Had Maomao guessed, when she procured it from the Verdigris house, that he would keep such a thing for himself? Would she think it base of him to resort to these means? It would only denigrate him further in her mind. Jinshi hoped she at least had a suspicion.

    Summary

"Maomao, I'm telling you, I would know what bench it was, given we …"

She waited as he trailed off, waiting to see how he described the long-past memory. We kissed? We fought? We went our separate ways?

The moon briefly peered out from it's hiding place to illuminate the garden, showing the red flush coloring in Jinshi's face. It was Maomao's turn to roll her eyes at his bashfulness. Not only had significant time passed to soften the more embarrassing elements of that evening after the first visit to the Western Capital, but they'd been married now for over a decade. She'd had his children. He'd done far more salacious things to her by now. Yet, he still stuttered out a mortified sounding, "Well, you know…"

Maomao hummed noncommittal, leaning back on her palms and turning her face up to the sky. "Do I? Perhaps my memory is failing, as well."

Or, a married jinmao find themselves back upon a familiar bench on another visit West.
