Summary
For sixteen years, Mikasa has watched the boy next door. First: through the eyes of a child, hand in his during family trips, his hand on her first bike when she learned how to ride. Then: through the eyes of a teenager, peeking behind her blinds into his room on hot summer months when he didn't wear a shirt, eyes lingering on his lips when he pulled away his cigarette.
Now, she is so much older, but he is older still, and the gap between them feels ever widening. But her desire to close it only feels more desperate.

“I’m not sure how this is supposed to go.” She hangs her jacket on his bed. There’s a little tie at her back that holds her dress together, and his eyes linger on the bare skin underneath it. He shoves his hands in pockets, so he doesn’t do something stupid like tug on the string. “Do I hug you?" She asks. "We’re going to have sex, so I’m not sure how I should start things, to be honest.”
“We don’t exactly go from point A to Z like that.” Eren swallows, cringing at the clinical, matter-of-fact manner in which she states her purpose. “There are some steps in the middle, you know.”

When Mikasa first appeared at the Jaegers’ door, all those years ago, Eren had been deliriously happy. After the death of his mother, he’d been desperate for company, needy for attention, and Mikasa seemed to smile only for him. He loved that about her, and the way she didn’t mind getting dirty even though she was a girl, and threw punches that knocked the breath out of him when he dared her to. As a boy, he’d always assumed that he’d marry her. That he’d be the one to claim the pale skin on the back of her neck, marking his territory with his teeth.
But it was hard to feel confident about that future now. Not when he knew what was waiting for him at home.

He felt half-mad to say it. She didn’t look like she believed him, her pretty mouth hanging open. But after a few spare moments, she seemed to regain her composure. With a trembling hand, she produced a piece of paper from her purse and a pen before writing down a number. When she passed it to him, it became clear that she did this because it was so exorbitant, she couldn’t bear to say it out loud. She looked away from him while he read it with a flush creeping up her pale, lovely neck.
He loved her even more then.
“For you, I’d pay this sum one thousand times over.”
Or: Childhood sweethearts Eren and Mikasa's reunion after being separated for ten years and the consequences that follow.
