Summary
Ilya spent most of his time away in Boston—over three thousand miles from Moscow. He saw Lev maybe twice a year.
He was small. He never ran around the house the way Ilya had at five, never made his presence loud enough to bother anyone. Most of the time, even Ilya forgot Lev was there when he came to visit and Lev never did anything to remind him of it.
Ilya tried his best to send presents for Lev and his niece during the holidays. But it never went further than that.
Which was why he didn’t expect to receive a call in the middle of the night, in Boston, after a game.
“Hello?”
“Good afternoon. This is the Guardianship Authority. Am I speaking with Ilya Rozanov?”
Ilya felt his heart drop.
He didn’t have any children in Russia… did he?
No. He most definitely didn’t.
“Yes.” he said. “This is Ilya.”
“I’m calling regarding the case of Lev Rozanov. According to our records, you are listed as his brother. Is that correct, Mr. Rozanov?”
