He's focusing on the mark on the ceiling because if he looks anywhere else, if he looks at Charles, the dam would burst and then all of the emotions would spill out, and Charles would leave because everyone leaves, they always leave, and it was better when he was reckless, impulsive, aggressive, angry; because he could pretend he didn't care about who he was hurting, and oh God, Charles is going to leave him and he's going to be all alone and life isn't worth living if he doesn't have Charles by his side, and--
"Max," his gentle rasp cuts through Max's brain running a mile a minute. "I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. Talk to me, cheri. What's going on?"
