“Nefer.” The name, warm, unhurried, sweet on her tongue. The tongue lifts to the ridge behind the teeth, Ne, a small surrender, the top teeth set themselves against the lip and press, and the air goes out warm over the place where they meet, Fer. Two beats. An opening and a held bite.

    Summary

The truth is that Nefer once thought blindness was a complete darkness, though she now knows that it varies. She had opened her eyes once — perhaps directly to spite Lauma’s mandates — and saw only flickers of light, concentrated where Lauma stood. And this split her chest with a horrible ache; the absence of what they once had, and the absence of moon’s beauty shining back at her.

    Summary

“I remember what you told me,” Cipher said. “When you gave me those boots. They’re blessed by Zagreus, I can move swiftly and silently when I wear them, and-“

“Put them on, and never get caught again,” Aglaea finished, breathlessly.

Cipher silently, slowly, raised Aglaea’s hand to her lips and pressed a kiss into the knuckle of her pointer finger. When Aglaea made a sound that wasn’t quite a gasp and wasn’t quite a groan, Cipher kissed the next knuckle, and the next, all the way down the line.

“Please,” Aglaea whispered. “No more games, please.”

“If I take off the boots you gave me,” Cipher whispered back. “It means I can be caught. It means I’m willing to be caught.”

The time Cipher came the closest to being caught, and the time she finally was.

    Summary

Despite having been the one to leave Aglaea and flee Okhema, Cipher cannot help but keep coming back. Aglaea wants to know why, to nail Cipher to a wall and interrogate her until she is satisfied with the answers, but she knows that any attempts to pry will only push Cipher even further away from her. So she waits, watches, hopes, for a day to come when Cipher is ready to share, until decades turn to centuries and it becomes far too late.
"Cifera takes a nap in the largest tree she can find in the garden, curled in on herself like a cat. Aglaea watches the rise and fall of her chest, the golden threads pulsing with the rhythm of it, committing it to eternal memory. She takes a knife to the worn-out surface of Cifera’s absence and carves her shape into it, from the tips of her fluffy ears to the gentle wave of her tail.
Within the space of her mind, when her hands bleed, they bleed red. She smears it, dark and messy, over the line of Cifera’s collarbones, down the back of her neck and between her shoulder blades, satisfied with the quality of her imitation. Beyond the glass wall, her emotions stare at her, pale and quiet, their original colors muddied by glowing gold."

    Summary

Kafka is playing violin. It’s a classical song from a planet they’ve just visited, though why they were there, Stelle can’t remember. It would sound better with an accompanying instrument, but Kafka sells it well, double-stopping chords spanning three octaves like she’s been doing it all her life. Stelle sits and watches in amazement; she should close her eyes, ingest the music, but she’s more concerned with the straight line of Kafka’s upper arm, the smooth motion of her bow, the borderline seductive look in her half-lidded eyes.

Stelle thinks, perhaps she could live and die by these little things, and her life would’ve been all the better for it.

Stelle likes sleeping, because asleep is when she sees Kafka.
