Summary
When Jax Briggs calls in his last favor, Sonya Blade finds herself dragged into a mission that ticks exactly zero of her boxes: find a missing OIA agent named Kenshi Takahashi, navigate the treacherous politics of Outworld, and do it all with Johnny Cage as her unwanted shadow.
The man is a walking liability. Loud, reckless, and armed with a smile that suggests he's never been told no in his entire life. He's also frustratingly connected to everyone she needs to talk to and infuriatingly capable in a fight.
But the trail is getting colder, the Black Dragon is somehow involved, and every lead she follows suggests Kenshi's disappearance is tangled up in General Shao's rebellion. Rumi is still not a hundred percent sure why she agreed to this objectively ridiculous “tutoring” session.
When it comes down to it, she thinks she's mainly doing this for Zoey, because Zoey is the only kind, genuine person at this whole damn school, and Rumi wants to help her. Zoey is absolutely hopeless with boys, and she needs help with her confidence before she tries to date one. Rumi sort of…didn’t mention the fact that all her own experience is with girls, but she’s pretty sure Zoey already knows. Kissing is a gender-neutral skill anyway, and Mira is going to handle the other part (thank god).
It’s definitely not because Mira made intense eye contact with her in the bathroom mirror last week while applying lipstick way too slowly. Or because of that time Mira coolly demolished the boy who was trying to score points by talking shit about Rumi at lunch.
Nope, it’s definitely not any of that. Rumi just wants to be a good friend to Zoey. A best friend. A friend who has never once been paralyzed by the desire to find and kiss every single one of Zoey’s freckles.
