    Summary

“Listen, if you want to thank me,” he says finally, “do you reckon maybe you can just keep talking? Doesn’t matter what about—I just miss it, you know. When you’re not around.”

That brings a strange little smile to Hans’s lips. He tilts his head. “What,” he asks, “me talking your ear off?”

A collection of missing scenes—meetings and partings—from across a very long summer.

    Summary

He remembered his Ma's voice then, telling stories of this exact feeling while she bandaged his wounds. Of the instinctual, bloodthirsty need to defend and fight, that was supposedly intrinsic—almost completely uncontrollable—to alphas. He hadn't listened then, blamed and pointed instead. But he believed her now, believed the lads in the village. He needed to break this boy.

Hans smoothed Henry's collar once more, his hands lingering longer than necessary.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Hans wanted to find the exact point where Henry’s composure would betray him.

    But not here.

    --

Henry and Hans set out to Kuttenberg to check on one of Katherine's girls. All the while they try to figure out how to bridge the gap after Suchdol.

“Do you remember the Black Death?”

    Henry frowned. “What?”

“The Black Death,” Hans repeated, voice thoughtful, like he was turning something over in his mind. “Do you remember it?”

Henry stared at him. “That was fifty years ago.”

    “Yes.”

    “I don’t remember it.”

Hans tilted his head slightly against his arm. “Really?”

“No,” Henry said flatly. “Because I wasn’t alive.”

Hans was quiet for a moment. Then, calmly, “I was.”

Henry blinked again, slower this time. “You weren’t.”

“I believe I was,” Hans said, with quiet certainty.

Henry let out a breath that was half a laugh. “You weren’t even born.”

    “In this life,” Hans clarified.

Henry turned his head to look at him properly now.

Hans met his gaze with complete seriousness “I remember it,” he said. “Not clearly. But enough. I was ill. Very ill. And no one believed me.”

Henry raised a brow. “Sounds familiar.”

    Summary

"My lord," said Galehaut, "I would do more for you than you would believe, and I have already begun."

Hans falls in love, finds a book, and tries to figure out how to avoid losing his best friend. It would be easier if he had anything at all to offer Henry, or if sodomy were not the sin of which men do not speak.
