“That’s quite the shiner, Whitaker.”
Dennis ducked his head when he recognized Dr. Robby’s voice, studying the floor as he felt a heat rise across his face. “Yeah, well, you should see the other guy.” He tried to joke, the smile not quite reaching his eyes.
“Mob debt? Bar fight? A jilted lover?”
Too exhausted to think straight, Dennis wished that he’d spent longer on rehearsing his excuse.
Robby had already stepped into his personal space to study him more closely, a finger under his chin to gently tip his head back to see the bruising better in the harsh fluorescent light. This did nothing to help Dennis think, and he tried his best to look anywhere except for Dr. Robby’s warm brown eyes.

After a little slip-up while on the job, Dr. Robby becomes aware of Dennis's situation. When Dennis shows up outside Robby and Jack’s house the next night, it’s against his will. Never mind that it had been his feet that had carried him here, that it had been he who had made up his mind and started the short journey to their neighborhood. His body appears to have betrayed him. Jack isn’t working tonight, has the next two nights off, actually, so Dennis knows they’ll both be here. Robby had left the hospital before Dennis had. There’s really no hope of backing out of this.
