“Oh you’re doing it like that? Oh! He’s toast.”
“Then fucking help me, god damn it, Kayne!”
Kayne could’ve told the little king a number of things. He could’ve told him that helping wasn’t part of the deal. He could’ve laughed in his face and trudged away. But he simply stopped. He snapped away his bag of gardettos and crouched to lean over Arthur.
He could help him. He had the ability—the choice.

He cut off as Parker pulled him into his lap, curled his fingers in the slightly too long hair curling at the back of Arthur's neck, and kissed him softly.
Arthur let out a small noise at just that contact.

It was a blazingly hot July afternoon, the sort only found melting the asphalt of major east coast cities: plants wilted, tempers flared, and Oscar was regretting his profession as he broiled under his cassock and collar, starch and cotton gone limp and translucent with sweat. The rectory was an absolute, stifling misery, windows open to allow for the pitiful gasps of breeze that hiccuped painfully and seldomly, offering no relief.
