When Troy had first met Harris, he thought he was losing it slightly, since he seemed to inexplicably smell like apples. Maybe all generational apple farmers just smelled like apples? Troy had eventually found out that Harris owned a ridiculous amount of apple scented products. Both his shampoo and conditioner were apple scented. His body wash was green apple. If he bought a candle, nine times out of ten, it was themed around apples. Naturally, because he loved his boyfriend, and his boyfriend loved apples, Troy began associating anything “apple” with Harris.
Or, Troy develops a Pavlovian response to apple scented things.
