Summary
The same vague, abstract guilt he always feels around Will hardens to a sharp shard of ice through his heart. Will still thinks they’re going to college together, that a future around Mike is something he wants. He doesn’t understand how being around Mike, who finds it impossible to exist sometimes, would drag Will down right when he should finally be soaring up and out of Hawkins. Better for Mike to save Will the trouble early on, rather than watch him come to terms with having to shake himself free of Mike if he ever wants to breathe.
(Summer, 1989. Mike is supposed to leave for college with Will in less than two months, and he still doesn't know what he wants. Maybe it would be better for them both if he just doesn't go? Will disagrees.)

Mike freezes.

Post-canon, Mike Wheeler crashes at his best friend’s New York apartment for a book deal. But he wasn't ready to see this version of Will Byers: confident, successful, in love, surrounded by community and so, so free.
While Will lives the life he has always deserved, Mike grieves El and comes to the quiet, devastating realization that he might be in love a few years too late.
Despite everything, they still seem to find their way back to each other.
