"You didn't– you don't like me!" Gai managed.

Kakashi frowned. "I like you, Gai. Have I really never told you that?" A depressing thought occurred to him. "Oh. Am I dead? Is that it?"

    --

The thing about it is that, while some people grow into themselves, Kakashi is the sort of person who grew out of himself. He wasn't ever very good at being a child. Gai hadn't noticed it when he was a child himself, but now that he's got a teenage version of his rival on hand to compare with, he's starting to come to some belated realizations. It shouldn't be surprising; who really gets to be a child in a ninja village? But Kakashi was definitely worse at it than most.

He'd feel sympathetic, except for how the cocky little bastard keeps inexplicably hitting on him.

"Lighten up, Kakashi! This can either be a grueling march or a brave quest. All I'm doing is letting it be a brave quest."

"Don't you think you should take this a little more seriously?"

Gai drew himself up, every golden muscular inch of him. "I take everything seriously, Kakashi, that's what you don't get about it! There's nothing more serious than having a positive attitude." He paused there for a moment, looking down at Kakashi, and then clutched his hands to his face. "Ahhhhh I keep forgetting who I'm talking to!"

Always with the dramatics. Maito Dai had been just as over the top at thirty-five, if not worse, so Kakashi wasn't really surprised. Some things are in the bones.

"What's he like?" Kakashi asked. "The me you're used to."

Gai pulled his hands apart and peered down at Kakashi. "I don't know if I should tell you," Gai said, sounding more serious than Kakashi expected. "Never meddle in jutsu you don't understand, they always tell me."

"And since when do you listen?"

Gai changed the subject. "Well, my Kakashi is like—he's like—hm!" he tapped his jaw with both hands, staring up at the dark canopy. "He's a brilliant shinobi, renowned throughout the ninja world, a man who is true of heart and loyal to the end!"

Kakashi nodded indulgently. Of course Gai would say that.

"And also," Gai went on, "he's a lazy, do-nothing bastard who thinks he's too cool for a normal conversation! He's a real asshole! He never acts like he takes anything seriously, and he has terrible taste!"

    ...

    “Well, that’s not entirely true.”

They all turned. Leaning against Gai’s shoulder like the man was a convenient fence-post, there was a taller and more solid version of Kakashi watching them through a curved smile. He wiggled his half-gloved fingers.

“Hi,” he said, “we’ve met before. I’m Hatake Kakashi.”

Gai, who had just crossed his arms and stood obligingly in place while the other man used him as a post, blew out an annoyed huff of air. “Children, meet my rival,” he said. “The current and proper version of him.”

“I’m the proper version?” the elder Kakashi asked, slightly disbelieving.

“Compared to this perverted little bastard,” Gai replied, and then instantly slapped his hands over his mouth, looking with wide eyed mortification at the kids.

Elder Kakashi looked at Younger Kakashi with an expression like “Really? What did you do now.” This was a look he most associated with Captain Shikaku, but the older version of him was recreating it pretty well.

“Miss Cunk, the story will not take centuries to tell, just that it covers centuries,” Louis says, his face growing very concerned.

    ...

“Jesus,” I mutter, but I keep eating.

Louis sucks the blood out of Rashid’s neck as Rashid looks like he’s about to cum. I’m having a decent time watching, but it’s doing something to Daniel psychologically.

    Summary

The living Danny—maybe playing along, or maybe responding genuinely—raised both hands in a show of harmlessness. Like Lancer truly had him at gunpoint.

Danny Fenton’s wet cold dead body was so heavy in Lancer’s single cradling arm.

“Who are you?” Lancer asked very simply.

And Danny, arms still raised high, let out a sigh deep enough to deflate his shoulders. Whatever light was in his eyes went dull, resigned to an acceptance Lancer could not in the moment understand.

“I am your worst student,” Danny answered. And he lowered one arm exclusively to point. “And THAT is the dead body of my ghost clone.”

    -------

Alone on the farthest outskirts of Amity Park, Danny Fenton and Edward Lancer bury the dead body of Danny's clone. It is long and tedious work, and Danny can't dodge Lancer's questions forever. Surely it's only fair of Lancer to demand to know what he has been pulled into. Surely Danny could use someone on his side, now that his evenings are spent burying his clones.
