The second blow lands harder than the first, properly sounding like a smack. Shane’s palm tingles slightly with the force of it.

Scott brought his smoothie up to his forehead, rolling the cool plastic cup over his temple to ease the headache he could already feel building. This was going to be an agonizing six-hour flight. Kip plopped down into the seat next to him, fishing his headphones out of his backpack.
“You okay?”
“Why did I think flying anywhere with Ilya Rozanov would be a good idea?” Scott muttered, glaring across the cabin at the six-foot Russian who was deep in an animated conversation with Kyle. Probably about how he was going to send Scott to an early grave.
The hockey gays take a trip to the Folsom Street Fair, and Ilya cannot help but be an absolute menace to Scott Hunter. Because it’s not like Scott is going to do anything about it, right? RIGHT!?

In laying down those events which transpired during that winter in the turning over of our century, it seems as though on paper they create an impression of little more than a tawdry tale, a freak show in writing for the morbidly curious. It’s no question that I spent a great deal of that time afraid for my life, and for my soul. And yet, I tell you - I have never felt quite so alive as I did during the days I have spent living in the graveyard.
I wonder what this might say about me. What a pair we make.

I remember we’d have to do that with you when you used to get in those moods as a kid,” Yuna says, a fond, knowing lilt to her voice. “You’d go hide out in those blanket forts we used to build you for hours, just tucked away in your own little world and hardly making a peep. Sometimes we’d have to bribe you to come out for dinner or to go to bed.”
Shane smiles to himself at the memory. It had been a while since he thought about how some days after hockey practice, he’d come home to a blanket fort in the living room and his favorite snacks arranged neatly on a plate in the kitchen ready for him to grab and take with him into the fort. He’d gladly do so, disappearing away from everything and everyone for hours at a time until Yuna or David would come to retrieve him.
“Yeah, I remember that too,” Shane says, Yuna’s words rolling around momentarily in his brain before taking root. “Thanks, Mom.”
Shane knows then and there what he’s going to do for Ilya when he comes to visit.
