On a typical day, his words would be respected. He’d be given tight smirks and smiles, mirth dancing in everyone’s eyes as they politely swallowed back words.
It’s not that day.
Uraraka almost bends in half with laughter, arms wrapped around her torso. “You’re so cute,” she partly cackles. Hagakure has wrapped him up into her arms, pinching his cheeks despite his struggles. “Itty bitty baby!”
“I’m going to kill you,” Hitoshi threatens. His squished cheeks make the threat soft.

“Oh, shit,” blurts out one of the strangers; hair crimson red and spiked. Hitoshi startles out of his thoughts, heart stammering in the middle of his throat. They’re older—far older than Hitoshi, who curls his small hands into fists at his sides. “You’re so – tiny, the hell?”
A girl with elongated earlobes smacks his shoulder with said earlobes. At his squawk, she huffs and says, “Don’t curse around him. He’s, like, nine.”
“I’m thirteen,” snaps Hitoshi, confusion and slight terror melting in favor of indignant rage. It’s not his fault he’s smaller than most of his year. His classmates already rub it into his face every time he steps onto campus, he does not need it from a bunch of high schoolers.

Hawks uses his feathers to retrieve Hitoshi’s belongings, shaking his head. “No one called me,” Hawks says quietly, and before that could settle into Hitoshi’s lungs, continues: “I was . . . taking a flight and saw you.”
Cold seeps into the soles of his feet. “O-oh.”
“What’s your name, kiddo?” questions Hawks as he helps Hitoshi into his shoes, likely not trusting the way Hitoshi’s limbs trembled. There’s still a feather nestled into his clothes. A sharp, grounding grasp against the fabric. Hawks’ smile twitches at the sight of Hitoshi’s note, but he doesn’t bring attention to it. “Shit, kid, I—how old are—?” Hawks cuts himself off, exhaling. It hitches. “Okay. Okay.”
It hits Hitoshi, suddenly, that Hawks, for all that he is the Number 2 Pro Hero, is barely twenty-two. Hitoshi, likewise, is barely sixteen.
When Hawks decided to indulge in a 3 AM craving, he didn’t expect the boy on the roof—and the boy clearly didn’t expect him, either.

Despite having stared in his general direction, Shinsou startled at his voice. Hizashi liked to think he wasn’t the most intimidating pro hero—and he was proud of his consecutive “#3 Kid-Friendly Pro” title—but Shinsou’s expression tightened and shuttered when he stepped into view. Hizashi scanned his students’ face, emotions swirling at the bruises and cuts.
He wondered how long Shinsou had been there, curled and shivering against a metal trashcan.
“You don’t have to lie,” Shinsou rasped out a moment later. Hizashi didn’t like the sound of his voice, either. “I know I . . . look like shit, sensei.”
“Language,” Hizashi half-heartedly corrected. It was an impulse, at this point.
Hizashi decided to investigate when a flustered intern talked about “some teen” sleeping in the alleyway beside the station. He hadn’t expected to find his introverted student, Shinsou Hitoshi—but he couldn’t say he wished the night had gone differently.

It’s not like he hoards food or snaps whenever someone asks him about his eating habits. It’s not like he skips meals or picks at his food in a way that makes it look like he’s eaten a good portion when he hasn’t. It’s not like he stares at his reflection every morning or thinks of himself as overweight. He doesn’t think he has much body issues, either.
Sure, it sometimes feels like he’s been pieced together all wrong, a tightness in the back of his throat whenever he steps onto a scale, something rattling in the back of his mind like a skeleton waiting to burst out of his skin—but that’s normal, isn’t it?
His body isn’t used to a quirk, after all. There’s an adjustment period he’s experiencing ten years too late. He’s barely passed the starting line while everyone else coasts ahead, leaving him to stumble as he tries to catch up.
It starts when All Might hands him a diet regime.

Summary
Six months have passed and still no word from Kaminari, and Shinsou is beginning to grow tired of waiting for the Hero Commission to do anything about it. Unsure if he was missing or dead, Shinsou is left to try and make sense of the loss the best way he knows how, alcohol.
Things are upended when he comes across a stray dog who seems more than happy to hang around, and its presence rattles something deep in Hitoshi, who finds the courage to take matters into his own hands.
Reaching as far as he can for closure, Hitoshi begins a journey to find out what happened to Denki, and get the answers he needs.
