All access to her children has been stopped up—she is permitted to visit with them, in the time between morning and noon, and the hours between dusk and night’s gloom.
The constrictions have left her wanting, contorting her into a greedy thing, as she hungrily presses kisses to her brood, holding them tight, tight, tight until Maelor beings to cry and Jaehaera lets out a yelp of, “Mother, you’re hurting me,” and even Jaehaerys, so quick to laugh, begins to weep as well, for he knows what this heralds.
Each night Helaena tries to impress their looks into her mind: the curve of Jaehaerys’s cheek, Maelor’s dimple, Jaehaera’s tremulous laugh.
Often, she returns from them with a thirst for wine, and takes to her bed with a stumbling gait. Often, she reaches for poppy milk, oblivion.
But sometimes it is sweet sleep she takes onto her tongue—readily supplied by Maester Gerardys, for her faculties are not required of her—and floats gently down into nothingness. There are many ways to lose oneself, and none so sweet as building a shield against reality.
