Summary
Recently unseated as the Mercay Island coroner, Salvatore has never been more miserable. Broke, despondent, and chronically single, he must find a date to an upcoming jamboree, or face, in his words, "humilation." But Salvatore's love life is small change compared to what happens at the jamboree itself: when a magical object with the power to solve a person's most serious problems goes missing, everyone is certain he's the one who stole it.
Meanwhile, Linebeck and Jolene try to navigate a "real" relationship, and Ciela -- hundreds of miles away -- isn't sure she's liking her new job.

Modern police AU.
Linebeck is a detective with the Mercay Island Police Department, a mostly easy job for a half-drunk guy creeping close to forty. When the usually quiet, sleepy island bears witness to a heinous crime, he must work with all the resources at his disposal - and then some - to solve a crime that seems to face obstacles at every turn.
Meanwhile, workaholic reporter Ciela Keen is determined to prove her worth as WMCY's youngest crime reporter, even if it puts her in harm's way more often than not, and some people preferred she weren't poking her nose where it didn't belong.
