Dennis sighed when he sat on the couch, pressing the heels of his palms into his eyes, shuddering. He listened to Trinity’s quiet footsteps and felt the couch dip next to him.
“What happened?” Her voice was soft as she bumped her shoulder with his.
“Nothing that really matters,” Dennis shrugged as he dropped his palms, leaning back to stare into the slowly rotating ceiling fan.
“Dennis, come on, I’m not stupid.” Her voice wasn’t unkind, simply strong. “You said you were going to see Luke after our shift. What happened there?”
“What the hell do you think?” Dennis turned to look at her with worn-out eyes.
