Her lashes are damp, stuck together in glossy tips, haloed with tears she hasn’t blinked away. And there’s a streak of spit curving down the soft plane of her cheek, thin and silver and obscene.

    For a second, Jackie feels the urge to reach down. To wipe it away with the pad of her thumb. To clean her up. To do something gentle, something kind.
