Summary
“You’re doing the right thing, Nat. I promise.”
She gives him that smile again, and it’s all he can do not to pull her into his arms, to comfort her in the way he knows she’ll never let him. He never did anything without permission. Never took anything from her without asking. He doesn’t pry, either.
His thumb traces over her hand, just once, before he starts to slide back to sleep on the floor.
She doesn’t let go. He looks from his hand to her, surprised. That look again. The look that she gave him when she first told him she was going on the run.
There’s no asking, no expectation. Just a firm grip on his arm, refusing to let go.
He nods, just once. Then he’s climbing into bed alongside her. He slides under the covers, lying down flat beside her. She turns back toward the window, her back to his chest as he waits for her to give him anything--some sort of sign on how far this goes. Or if it doesn’t go any farther at all.
She turns her head over to him, looking over her shoulder. Not touching, save for where she holds onto his arm like the floor might drop from them any second. But not shying away either. And for now, that’s enough. -

He pulls the towel off his shoulder, starting to wipe down an already clean countertop. “Well, you know… your mom and Luke are getting older… and… I don’t know, I just… thought I might stay a while.”
He meets her eyes.
She pulls her coffee mug down from her lips, and Jess catches the curiosity in her gaze. “Since when does Jess Mariano stay?”

Summary
Distantly, as if through bulletproof glass, she hears the sound of rushing water. She’s standing in front of the shower, watching his brow etched in concentration, watching as he sticks his hand into the water and almost comes out cursing. He makes a few adjustments before he looks back at her, brows furrowed.
“Okay, Sapulpa,” he murmurs. He taps her shirt gently. “Up you go.”
She registers distantly that he’s helping her undress as she pulls her sweater over her head. There are bruises from her fall all over her right side, her skin turning a purplish color.
His jaw ticks, but he says nothing, his eyes glancing from the bruises quickly away. He meets her eyes. “There you go. Think you can manage the rest?”
She nods, too tired to protest and too far gone to blush.
If he had asked her any other day…
“Good. Guess I’ll uh…” Tyler scratches behind his neck, turning around to walk out the door.
“Ty?”
It’s the first thing she’s said in five minutes.
He turns around. “Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
His eyes soften. “Anytime, Sapulpa.”
He turns around again, but this time, he doesn’t try to leave.
She thinks she might fall apart if he did. -

Keefe bent to put a hand on his shoulder, his cheeks wet. “Fitz—“
“I SAID GO!”
Keefe flinched as anger spiked beneath his fingers. “Come on, Biana.”
“No,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “No, I want to—“
Her eyes glistened with tears, and she touched her hand to her mouth as a sob escaped her.
“I know.” He took her wrist and pulled her far, far away from the cave, even though he wanted nothing more than to stay with Fitz.
But Fitz needed space.
He left Biana next at Everglen, then ducked past his parents into his wide, empty room.
It was devoid of color—and he never realized it was so big.
There was no warmth in it. There was no use looking to his parents for comfort, either.
