    Summary

Mel King planned her life out to a T when she was thirteen years old.

What she hadn't planned for was meeting Frank Langdon on her first day of college at Penn State.

She definitely hadn't planned on becoming best friends with him.

And she absolutely hadn't planned on falling in love with him.

or: the one where friendship comes first, love comes quietly, and timing makes a mess of everything.

    Summary

I had been standing by the nurses station, charting, when Frank came up behind me and let his hands drop on my shoulders, he dug his fingers into the tight muscles of my back and a shiver ran down my spine. I felt my heart skip a beat and I could hear him talking, but I couldn’t make out a single word. My brain had short circuited and I had no clue why. I was probably just tired and my body had misinterpreted the meaning of Frank's hands on my body.

I had a mental list of things Mel said she liked to do. They were rare because she had a hard time figuring out which were things Becca liked to do, and which were things Mel liked to do. But, a few weeks ago, after she had mentioned jigsaw puzzles, her eyes actually brightened. So puzzles immediately went into the mental list of Things Mel Actually Enjoys.

This is mostly a canon compliant fic that takes place post series 2. Frank is dealing with the aftermath of his addiction and what that means for his marriage, while Mel is trying to date seriously for the first time, except they are in love with each other, and might or might not know it; jealousy, and angst follow.

Panem taught their bodies to endure. The Games taught their bodies to be weapons. The war taught their bodies to be pieces.

In the calm that follows the war, they learn how to let their bodies be theirs. And like everything else, this leads them to each other.

Like the one Frank thinks of now, as he stares at the ceiling. He can practically heat Mom’s voice, chipper and raspy and kind of grating: Time flies when you’re having fun!

Frank is not having fun. It must be why time seems to have stilled.

    Summary

Some nights were, naturally, worse than others.

Nights where Frank laid in bed for so long, staring at the ceiling, that it made his heart start to race with anxiety and his back ache and ache and ache no matter how he positioned himself. Nights where his thoughts spiraled out into worst-case-scenarios that seemed so vivid and inevitable that he would have to get up and go to the bathroom, just to turn the light on and look at himself in the mirror to remember what was actually real.

Those were the nights when he wanted the pills again the most: alone in his guest bedroom, trying to wring sleep out of his body like the last few drops of water out of a dirty dishcloth.

He tried not to call Mel on nights like that. He did not always succeed.
