From what Louis had told him, Daniel had pictured Lestat as a Frenchman in his late-thirties, pug-faced, maybe a little balding, and permanently red in the face from the burst capillaries that come with too much drinking and smoking. The truth is a bit of a hard punch to his stomach, an uncomfortable tightness in his throat.
Daniel has worked too hard on his relationship with Louis to let some French asshole take his place.

Louis clicks on the link with shaky fingers.
He only manages to read Lestat de Lioncourt spotted having a steamy makeout session under the Tuscan sun with in the split second before a pop-up ad obscures the headline, and the cover photo loads.
It’s a pixelated shot of two people locked in an intimate embrace on a small, vaguely familiar balcony with a wrought iron balustrade. The first person, who’s facing the camera full-on and smirking indulgently, is Lestat. The second person, draped against Lestat’s chest with their back to the camera, completely naked down to their bare feet except for a pair of maroon boxers, is Louis.

“From the flight over,” Lestat said with a solemn nod, unscrewing the cap from his drink. “What do you say? We can get to know each other!”
Louis waved away the offered bottle.
“We just did that. We braved the hordes downstairs, we took the elevator together. I know your name, you know mine. It’s nice to meet you. There. All done.”
In late December 1973, Louis and Lestat meet at a history conference in San Francisco. They are drawn to each other, but Louis has hang-ups, and Lestat has a secret.

“That’s the thing, Louis.” Lestat offers him a small smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “I finally understand why you couldn’t love me back. It wasn’t easy to accept, but it’s time for me to be selfless and do the right thing.”
Louis can't stand the silence that follows. “What's the right thing to do, Lestat?”
“It’s time for me to let you go.”
Or: Lestat decides that it's time to part ways. Louis has a problem with that.
