Ellie couldn’t remember how long she’d spent on her knees at the beach of Santa Barbara. However, she did remember the feeling of exhaustion from the past three years weighing in the pit of her stomach. She felt the sting of every injury from encountering the infected, the Rattlers and Abby meet the cold salty water like a sudden bullet. Worst of all was the searing pain coming from her side, leaving a layer of her own blood clinging to her skin. But deep in her chest was a small glowing warm feeling of closure.

Like she was being held by some invisible force not to even flinch. Her and Joel had settled in a small abandoned bungalow in the middle of who knows where. Ellie hadn’t had those trivial details at the front of her mind. She knew they had made progress since the Lake but she didn’t feel they were nearly far enough. No where was far or safe enough.

Goddamn it, Joel. Just talk to the kid. You’ve had this before, you still do. But she hasn’t-”
“This? What the fuck are you-”
“A family, Joel.” The younger man stops and takes a deep breath. “A fucking family, asshole.”
