Summary
Robby perfects talking to him without talking to him. Checks in with banal questions about the whens of his shifts and barely remembers to listen to the answers. He’s pantomiming participating in life, and badly. He misses the looks that Jack sends him, drops the references, bumps shoulders around ER beds.
They have a shorthand, the two of them. They don’t need words or explanations, not when they have a rhythm and choreography that decades of working together have given them.
Only Robby can’t hear the music now.

Summary
Four hours into his shift, Jack was out in the ambulance bay, trying his best not to kick the damn bike – he’d been over there every hour, checking that it hadn’t moved. He’d even checked the abandoned wing, but had to admit it: Robby was nowhere to be found.
He looked at his phone for the fifth time in less than a minute. Fuck it, what was the point of his therapist saying “feel free to call in case of emergency” every week for the past five years if Jack never took her up on it?
The phone rang only once before a worried voice answered, “Jack?”
“I need you to talk me out of tracking Robby down and locking him up in my basement,” he spat.
.
Or: after Robby's done rocking Baby Jane Doe, the bike doesn't move, Robby takes shelter, and Jack's heart is tested.Bookmarked by giidas
