In the hours after the bank raid Joan Thursday is keenly aware of one thing: she cannot stay in Oxford. The destination doesn't matter, it just can't be here, in her parents' home, around the places she grew up, where everything feels like it is suffocating her and reminding her that she's the reason Ronnie Gidderton is dead. The place that she settles on, where she thinks no one will look for her and where she can just breathe, is first on the list alphabetically and in her price range is Kembleford, but the little village brings with its own complications into Joan's life and healing journey.
