“I’ll wash your jacket,” Lars says, holding his hand out. The bottom half of Driver’s jacket is dark and stained with blood. (The blood goes all the way around, like it’s not only from Driver’s injury. Lars pretends not to notice.) It’s ripped, next to the zipper, from the knife that was in his stomach. Lars doesn’t think Driver should wear a bloody jacket.
Driver shakes his head, eyeing Lars warily.
Well. That’s okay. Lars doesn’t like when people take his blanket, either.

Lars finds the Driver bleeding in his car on the side of the road. A tentative relationship forms.

Six has no idea what he's doing.
Not when he tugs a shivering, half-asleep Claire into their fourth safe house in the last two weeks. Not when he breaks into the nearest grocery store to stock up on food with actual nutrients that a growing thirteen-year-old needs because his stash is running dangerously low. And certainly not when she tries to hide how she cries herself to sleep at night, fingers curled tight around a polaroid photograph of her uncle.
His hands are calloused, scarred, and covered in blood. They know the shape of a pistol grip or a knife handle, the feel of a nose broken against knuckles or a windpipe crushed beneath fingers. These hands have destroyed too many lives to count, have taken, and taken, and taken with no remorse or hesitation. These hands don't remember how to be gentle.
They haven't had to be in twenty-six years.
