“You know, there really is nothing you can do” he says, suddenly, and Ray just stares at the back of his head, traces his eyes along the fine hairs at the nape of his neck. His gaze lingers a bit longer on the numbers wrapped around Norman’s neck.
They’ve never resembled a black, tight noose to Ray more than they do now. Not even as a kid, when he’d stay in front of the mirror and just stare with widened eyes, the numbers blurring until they looked like a line cutting across his skin.
They stay like that for a few seconds, simmering in the silence. Norman finally turns around at the lack of response from Ray, and his eyes are silent. Usually Ray can read things off of them, can see movement behind them. Like the fishes the children catch a brief glimpse of when playing by the river, the waters clear and reflective of the sky in summer.
There is nothing swimming behind Norman’s eyes anymore. Like he's taken them and buried those things deep inside, so deep they’ve dried up. Ray knows the method well, has it seared into his brain.
He can barely breathe.

Nagisa feels his legs trembling as he stands with the Beauxbatons school champion, a blond girl who stands a few inches taller than him. Yeah, he signed up, but he didn't actually expect to be chosen.
He's so focused on his own plight that he almost doesn't hear the last name being called.

If Karma hears any of the whispers, he doesn't show it. He strides down the table, joining Nagisa by the Triwizard Cup with a smile and a wave to the audience.
"Hey, Nagisa," he whispers among the chaos, like no time passed at all. "It's been a while."
