"This is the Unreliable," ADA confirmed. "Registered to Captain Alex Hawthorne. I must insist that you depart and await the return of my captain."
The trespasser's expression changed. Stress increased from 43% to 74% and grief rose to 32%. "He's... Hawthorne won't be coming."
ADA knew that there could be many causes of this. She knew the world beyond her cameras--and frequently within range of her cameras--was full of potential dangers. He had always faced them all and come back, beating the odds time and time again. It was impossible that he had not done so again this time.
(No, it was not impossible. But ADA wished it were so.)

He was happy for them. Happy at least something good had come out of everything, that something could work out in this world. And if he went home to his empty apartment and twin bed, well, that was his problem. If he dressed in one of his nicer shirts, if he spent a while in front of the mirror arguing with himself over how pathetic it was to touch up his appearance for what was a casual fucking dinner with coworkers, it was his problem. He could handle it. It was worth it.

Summary
He's doing maintenance on his Kineema today, on his day off. Partly it is because he needs an excuse to get out of his apartment, at least as far as the ground-floor garage. Partly he hopes that the routine will cool him, or distract him from the heat. It does neither, but it does relax him. The world moves out of his control, pieces shifting and rearranging whenever he turns his back- but this engine block only moves when he wishes it to, only needs some elbow-grease and care to operate at peak efficiency. It doesn't ask anything of him that he is unable to give to it, with pleasure.
Partly, he is down here because he needed an excuse. Something to be doing that would justify saying no.
Kim is having a perfectly normal day off, by himself. Which is what he prefers. Definitely.

Summary
This whole thing had started out as an impromptu biology exchange, where Rocky had explained the basic nerve structure of his digits and palm, and Grace had, in turn, explained some of the nerve structures in the human body. Including in his neck, where Rocky's third hand rests. His heart is hammering in his chest, and now he knows that Rocky can feel it through his fingers instead of just hearing it as he usually does.

Summary
In linguistics, a false friend is a word in a different language that sounds similar to a word in your own, but differs significantly in meaning. No word in any Eridian language could possibly be mistaken for English. But Erid absolutely has false friends.
In his right mind, Grace would easily identify the mistaken assumptions inhibiting his integration on Erid. They are:
1: A molecular biologist and a sapient rock can cobble together translation software that reflects the etymological nuance of an entire alien language.
2: Eridians are enough like humans to have an area 51 and look forward to using it.Unfortunately, Grace hasn’t been in his right mind in years.
Or: a ‘Return to Erid’ story where Grace struggles to touch down alone.
