    Summary

It was his most prominent memory of his childhood. Her complaints over his untidy appearance, as if he was ruining their perfect family image. As if Maddie running as soon as she could didn’t stain that. Because Buck—Evan—being a ‘waste of potential’ and a disappointment really put their family on the map of outstanding. The wooden floors of his childhood house were thick, but never solid enough to muffle the acidic words his mother had for him.

His clothes weren’t spotless. He was always covered in blood, scrapes or bruises. The constant ER visits, neighbours whispering over the rowdy and reckless Buckley child. But his curly hair was the cherry on the shit-pie. In his mother’s eyes that was Buck’s—Evan’s—greatest sin. At least, for twenty-nine years, he thought it was.

Bobby takes Buck home after "Buck Begins" and finds out he has curly hair. They talk about it, in a roundabout way.

And there, Phillip's voice echoed in his head: “When you lose a child, you… you see him everywhere, in all the people he could have become, in all the lives he could have lived. It’s something you can never recover from, someone who can never be replaced!"

Because that was the point, wasn't it?

Buck didn't know how to be a son because he was never anyone's baby; just a reminder of what his parents had lost.

He knew that, but what scratched the walls of his brain was the annoying thought that crept under his skin and whispered the fateful question: did Bobby also see him as nothing more than what his kids could have been?

    -

Or, If being someone's son meant living as a fallback, Buck was destined to die in someone else's shadow.

    Bobby won't allow that.

    Summary

Poppy Ashford wasn’t supposed to end up in California. She wasn’t supposed to lose her mum, or trade Oxford for Stanford, or spend sleepless nights in a hospital with a father she barely knew. And she definitely wasn’t supposed to keep running into the same broody med student — in coffee shops, on late shifts, even the seat beside hers.

Conrad Fisher had promised himself he was done. After Belly, after all of it, he thought keeping his head down was safer. Then there was Poppy — sharp, stubborn, disarming in ways he didn’t see coming.

It wasn’t supposed to matter. But Poppy kept cutting through the noise, filling silences he thought were permanent, and he couldn’t stop noticing.

He told himself he wasn’t looking for anything. And yet, somehow, he kept finding her.

    Summary

    hiraeth
(n.) a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past.

Last summer left Conrad Fisher with nothing but ruins, yet autumn offered something unexpected in the form of Devon Watson. She is not a saviour or a whirlwind, but a steady presence, unflinching in her care, and in her company, Conrad finds the seasons shifting; loss no longer the only thing to measure time by.

Or, in which Conrad finds someone who chooses him and only him for once, and tries to mend his relationship with the only living member of his family that he can somewhat stand.
