    "And what did you make of Dr. Smartypants? Quite a way with words, don't you think?"

    "He's something," Steve hedged. "Was hoping you could shed some light."

    "Where would be the fun in that?" Natasha chuckled. "Have I ever sent you on a wild goose chase?"

    He sighed again, heavily. "No."

    "Have I ever failed to have your back?"

    Steve grunted at the irony. She'd been assigned to his detail just after he'd thawed out. The word he'd use to describe that time would be 'suffocating'. But then somehow, over the years, the chokehold had become an embrace. "What kind of minefield am I walking into here? Can you at least tell me that?"

    As always, Natasha heard what he didn't ask her. "No. But I think you should let him fill you in on the rest himself. He is a historian, after all. Don't want to steal all of his thunder."

    Steve laughed despite himself. "So you think I should do this?"

    "I think it's been a long time since you've had a real adventure." Steve would have rolled his eyes at her mom-ing him if it wasn't, well, the truth.

    Or: Steve receives a letter from Dr. J.B. Barnes, Brooklyn Historical Society. Except not quite that J.B. Barnes.

After six tours of duty and nine months in captivity, Bucky knew how bad things could get, so he didn't dare ask for anything else. Especially not someone to hold.

    Until a tall, blond super-soldier crash-landed into his quiet life and threatened to make all his dreams come true.

    Steve Rogers would be the first to tell you he's had it rougher than some but better than most. His job at the coffee shop lets him do his art, work with his best friend, take care of his ma, and ogle the muscular mechanics at the local auto-body shop. His health and his love life could be better, but he's very aware of how lucky he is to have it this good. Oh, and live in Brooklyn. Simple life, simple pleasures.

    Is it really so much to ask to be able to get across the street in one piece? Apparently.

    Before he knows it, Steve finds himself on a collision course with every hotrod coming out of the lot, with the quiet but hunkalicious new hire at the body shop, and with... well, romance.

    The world was full of things no one could have expected.

    Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes never expected to fall from a train into decades of torture and killing.

    HYDRA never expected their perfect Winter Soldier's programming to shatter.

    And Bucky, who'd once been the Winter Soldier, who was now an auxiliary to the Avengers, never expected to look down from a rooftop in New York City, where he was keeping watch over the world's most ineffectual aspirant supervillains, and see a tiny ball of angry sunshine. Fierce and fearless, he loosed feelings in Bucky that he'd thought were gone forever.

    Bucky was determined to see him again. The better thing would have been to introduce himself. Not to stealthily follow him as he leapt across the rooftops, strong and agile, feet touching down like he was doing gravity a favour.

    The world may have been full of things no one could have expected, but Bucky probably shouldn't have been surprised when his tiny ball of fierce, angry sunshine dumped him on his ass.
