The sparrow was already dead when she found it in the garden.
Glassy eyes, staring at nothing. She closes them gently, cradling the small, soft thing in her palms. It’s warm to the touch, but cooling quickly.

He's thought about methods. There are plenty of tall buildings in the area, and he has his razor. He could slit his wrists, but that one has a low success rate. He's better off throwing himself off of a roof. Dess doesn't remember much of the fight itself, admittedly. She'd been crossfading since mid-afternoon in preparation for the party, and drinking straight liquor since Dad brought out the hors d’oeuvres. It filters through the haze in pieces.
Isn't it enough that she came back? Why can't that be enough for them? They keep looking at her like they're expecting to see someone that died six years ago. Dess doesn't know how to break it to them that they're never getting her back.
