    It took every ounce of restraint to not show the surprise, the burst of incredulous laughter at his audacity. “It is a large galaxy,” she said, echoing herself from earlier. “Rumors have a great deal of room to travel. And exaggerate.”

     
    “I find they are not as exaggerated as one might think,” Thrawn replied. “Especially with the promise of your discretion.”

     

    She considered him. He was asking for a black-market piece without even a hint of subtlety, and that meant he was either assured of her compliance or was laying a careful trap. Perhaps both.

     

     
    “And if I were to have discretion?” she asked.

     

     

    He paused, his gaze sweeping over her, a silent, meticulous inventory that summarized and neatly footnoted her before she could bristle at the implied assessment. A flicker of satisfied intellectual curiosity softened the hard line of his mouth. “I am confident,” he said, “that we will find much to discuss.”
