Brendan realises with a heat in the bottom of his stomach that he can’t move his arm unless Gerry lets him go. Couldn’t push him away if he decided to keep hurting him. Wouldn’t have a choice. Can’t help thinking that maybe Gerry would tell him it's for his own good, that he knows what's best for him. “Are you and Jakey together, then?” Arthur's curious voice and he chokes on the smoke filling his throat, hacking and spluttering.
“You what?” He wheezes.
“Oh, you aren’t then?” Arthur says, tilting his head slightly in the way he does that makes him look like a little puppy. “Sorry— I just assumed, you talk about him so much” he looks a little contrite now, but still curious, sharp eyes scanning over Heinz in a way that makes him feel like he’s about to be pulled apart and examined.
“No— no, no, definitely not, he’s my best friend.” He shakes his head, dropping his cigarette and stamping it out with his food, avoiding Arthur’s searching eyes. “Jake has a girlfriend, anyway.”
There’s a beat of silence before Arthur speaks again, “Oh.” He says, and then— “Oh.”
or, Heinz has more in common with Arthur and Will than he'd like to admit and it sends him into a spiral.
