Summary
Will grabbed one from the fruit bowl and started chopping, which meant that he turned away from Mike again. Something in his chest hurt. Why wasn’t Will talking to him more? They were best friends, were they not? He understood that they must’ve grown apart over the time since they last saw each other, but surely that should mean they should be catching up, right?
“Can you get El? This should be done in a few minutes anyway.”
“No prob-” Will had already covered his ears again, leaving Mike’s response to die on his lips.----
When Mike Wheeler landed in California to spend his sophomore spring break with his girlfriend and his best friend after not seeing them for over a year and a half, he thought that everything would go smoothly. But Will's distant, and El's keeping something from him. When the military show up at the Byers' house the night after he arrives searching for El and Will, things take a turn that nobody ever expected.

Summary
Mike squinted, staring up at the figure standing stock-still in the doorway.
Then, his eyes adjusted and he let out a loud gasp, his eyes widening comically.
The person looked mangy, as if they’d just spend the last week on the worst camping trip of their life—twigs stuck in their hair and dirt covering them from head to toe. But the worst was the expression on their face—wild, nearly manic in its surprise, like they couldn’t remember the last time they’d seen another living person.
The name tumbled from Mike’s lips, quiet and more than a little awed.
“Max?”
Or
Mike gets taken instead of Holly and he and Max go through some forced bonding that has them discovering they’re more similar than they realized.

“Will’s eyes seem to focus, and their gaze sluggishly drags over to Mike. His hazel eyes were tinged slightly green, so Mike knew he’d been crying earlier, and his pupils were strangely dilated, looking like large black dots spotted in his iris.
Did they drug him?
Will blinked out of sync, eyebrows knitting together in effort to get a sentence out. “Mike?” He slurs, head lolling slowly to turn to him. “Wha’ are you doin’ here?”
Yeah, he’s definitely high.”
OR
will is captured and interrogated by the military, so mike kidnaps him back and deals (if you can call it that) with a very delirious, drugged will.

Summary
Mike wants to know who Will’s crush was. And how Will knows that this guy he had a crush on definitely wasn’t like him.
I can hold out some hope that the finale will address some of the obvious tension between Mike and Will. And if it doesn’t, here’s a fic to make it better.

Summary
Mike had seen Will scared. He’d seen him quiet, cautious, defiant, brave in ways no one else noticed.
But he’d never seen him like this— nail bat in hand, every swing clean and brutal, every movement sharp with purpose. The fight should have left Mike frozen with fear, but instead he found himself watching in awe and something he couldn't quite name.
