"Into the city for some supplies," said Marya, rolling up her sleeves and gritting her teeth. "It is time for this ship's capabilities to increase by one new medic."

With Monty and his naturalist abilities gone back through the Biangle to Gath, and Van reluctant to overuse Tazgw’agwa’s boon, the captain’s desire to pick up the slack has everything to do with her duty to the ship and her crew, and nothing at all to do with the yawning chasm that opens in her soul when she has nothing with which to distract herself.

Olethra is a keen learner, that is for sure. She is enthusiastic with a curiosity that far surpasses anything Marya has seen before — far beyond her own sky-eyed wonder at the marvellous world of aviation that Comfrey MacLeod had introduced her to as a teenager, and Ludmila's stunned amazement when Marya, herself, had later brought her aboard the Kingfisher. She throws herself into every task Marya assigns her with a diligence that contradicts everything Marya has come to know about her, meticulously asking questions and taking notes whenever Marya leads her around the vessel and instructs her on the ins and outs of a skyship.
It is just—
The issue is not so much Olethra as it is Marya. To put it as simply as possible, Marya doubts she is a good mentor at all.
Or: 5 times Marya felt like an incompetent mentor, and the 1 time her protégés ganged up on her to prove her wrong.

Torse’s shoulders are tense and pensive. His arm falls back to his side. Maxwell is not the most physical of people (besides in the ring), but his fingers twitch and stay where they are. Touching metal is different than the heat and pressure of skin.
He swallows thickly. With his thumb resting on a weld line, all he can think to say is: “What does it feel like?”
Torse pauses curiously. “What does what feel like?”
“Your heart, when you change it. When you switch from gold to iron.”
