A few hours later, Joaquin fessed up to whatever Sam had already noticed was eating up at him. "I swear I didn't know he was still your emergency contact", he'd said. "I thought you changed back to Sarah, and when the doctors asked if they should call, I said sure, absolutely". Sam forgave him, of course, but had closed his eyes soon after to chase away the headache that was already setting in. It was too much for a day, and it felt as if ages had gone by since he passed out after defeating the villain of the week, not less than twenty four hours.

Sam unwillingly breaks no contact and Bucky is terrified at the mere thought of being near the (injured) past love of his life — although maybe there's still hope for their future.

Summary
All of Sam’s friends were disturbed and yet sorry for his current state. Not nearly as miserable as he’d been at first, but still not quite healed. Natasha was still pissed at the man who broke his heart, T’Challa tried to distract him with different hobbies, Carol was on her fifth “let me beat him up” offer, Rhodes had taken him to several of his richer friend’s parties, Joaquin sent numerous videos a day to cheer him up. They knew he was doing better, his familiar glow had returned to his face brighter than it had been during almost the entirety of the relationship, but they worried. At the beginning, his biggest fear was to lose a friend — his best friend. At the end, he felt guilty with the relief that washed over him.

Summary
His wish soon came true in the form of one Bucky Barnes, walking around as if counting casualties. When their eyes crossed, he could have sworn the former Winter Soldier’s face lightened in relief while he picked up his pace. But then again, Sam’s judgement couldn't be trusted amidst all the weirdness surrounding him at the moment.

Summary
Bucky noticed his staring. They were helping one of Sarah’s neighbors unload grocery bags while making light conversation about random things rather than their talks of the end of the world they were already so used to. Seeing him so soft, so free, smiling and laughing, all of the details combined made it so Sam couldn’t stop sneaking glances at him. It didn't help that he was wearing a shirt with short sleeves in the summer heat, something he didn't do before when in his civil clothes to hide the prosthesis — and, horniness aside, it was nice to see he felt comfortable enough.

Summary
While everyone had heard stories of merpeople turning human, exchanging their fins for legs and scales for a full skin, the opposite was just as possible. Unheard of, at least around the seas he’s traveled through, but possible nevertheless. The only problem was that, while sea witches were many and very powerful, they distrusted humans. It was a common concept among witches all around; even the ones on the surface had a hard time revealing themselves. The fear of society using their powers to their own benefit was too big to risk it.
