That fracture opened up by the separation of Julien's hands from hers is widening, forming a yawning well of desperation, a frightening thing that digs its fingers into her and threatens to rip her apart. She bites her tongue until blood slips down her throat, trying to tame the monster, to call it to heel.
It does not work. Her lungs are not working either. No matter how many times she opens her mouth to say yes, Julien, you have my permission, the words simply refuse to come out.
"I would beg you to stay, Sir Davinos," she whispers. The tears surge up again, threatening to choke her words. She holds them back. "I do not wish to spend the night alone."
In another universe, Julien remains at the Palazzo, instead of going to the Tangled Sheet.
