The pages are bent and crumpled where he cried over it, scratched words off with too much force and too much ink, roughed it up while writing down. It's a messy bunch of paper that doesn't hold together well and some of the handwriting is almost illegible. Cosette cradles the letters in her arms, tucks them on her apron away from view and holds the bundle like it's something sacred and fragile.
