Some soldiers do. Levi has heard them, rustling sleeplessly in their bedclothes in the barracks and whispering fervently on nights before expeditions. He doesn't pay it any mind, because what kind of a hypocrite would he be? With his small trunk of belongings littered with patches cut from Corps jackets, his mother's silver pendant pinned always to the inside of his cloak over his heart, the small finger-sized box tacked to his bedpost with its tightly-wound scroll encased... Levi isn't in a position to judge.

Erwin's eyebrows lift, his heart thudding in his chest — not unlike how it always does when he hears those words, the little weightless jag of nerves behind his navel, his body trained to zero in on the commands. But here in the dead of night, the swoop in his belly drops sharply, anxiously. No one should be up there; the ladder should be locked. Erwin slips through the canvas flap and peers up into the ceiling of the dimly-lit big top.

But like gauze being peeled from a still-healing wound, Erwin pulls away, leaving Levi stinging and raw. The soft sound of their lips parting is loud in his ears. He can't speak.
