Knuckles let out a sigh. Boy, was he in for it now. He rolled his eyes, turning towards Rouge to humor her and—
His heart caught in his throat, the world around him seemed to fall silent as he zeroed in on Rouge.
She looked stunning. Her hair was lying limp, along with her ears, dragged down by the weight of the water. Her fur sticking up at odd angles, and her usually slicked back bangs were falling messily in front of her face. Her makeup had been nearly all washed off at that point, leaving her face strangely barren of color. Her eyelids lack their signature blue and her lips were pale in comparison to their usual bright pink gloss. Her under eyes were darker than usual, and some remnants of bleeding mascara still clung to her lashes- and she was perfect.

Summary
Rouge convinced Knuckles to leave Angel Island to undertake a G.U.N. mission with her. This requires them to travel through a dark forest where neither of them can see all that well. This is fine since bats can echolocate, and echidnas can sense electricity. Rouge guides Knuckles, who knows where she is because he can sense the chaos energy in her. It's a system that works, and Rouge jokingly asks why. Knuckles honestly tells her that he trusts her.
And Rouge... thinks about that.
