Summary
(summary and tags contain SPOILERS for earlier works in the series!)
Shane and Ilya are champions. They are partners, and they’re in it for life. And people are starting to notice.
After being traumatically outed two years ago, Shane and Ilya's relationship and their lives have been fundamentally changed, and most days, Shane thinks that's a good thing. But sometimes, the pressure of being out, and the endless online speculation about #hollanov, and rumors running rampant through the NHL, and a new generation of rookies looking up to them, and the knowledge that everyone is relying on Shane Hollander to be perfect at all times—sometimes it's a lot.
But Shane's dealing with it. Ilya seems happier than he's ever been, and Shane just needs to get his act together to support his husband. He can do that. He needs to, and he will, if he doesn't crack under the pressure first.
They've got a second Stanley Cup to win, after all.

Summary
He can’t tell Ilya though. He can’t tell Ilya that his team might not be right for Shane. That this perfect solution is making Shane a worse hockey player, a bad teammate.
That maybe Shane Hollander of the Voyagers really was his full name. That Shane Hollander of the Centaurs might not exist.
He can’t say that. He can’t ruin everything. He can’t dim the shine in Ilya’s eyes, the bounce in his step, the color in his cheeks he didn’t have the last few years.
Ilya sacrificed hockey for their relationship for two years, played on a crappy team and watched Shane win. It’s Shane’s turn to sacrifice, to figure out how to make this work and let Ilya lead this time.
Or:
Transitions are hard for Shane. Joining his husband's team turns out not to be an exception to that rule.

Summary
If things don’t click between Ilya and Shane, if they can’t properly function and communicate in a professional setting, they won’t win anything. The rest of the team will suffer. And that’ll be Shane’s fault. Ilya led this team to the second round last year when no one even expected them to make the playoffs. Everyone already knows that this is his team. Shane is the one that needs to fit.
So Shane, simply, will be the best. He will make sure no one can question his place in this league. He will make himself fit.
or, Shane's first year as a Centaur, everyone (Shane) expects great hockey and a perfect marriage. It's not.
