    You didn’t expect me to be someone you cared about. Damian finishes the thought for him, teeth gritting behind his closed lips. His skin is prickling with the pressure of being seen, recognized. It’s not what he wanted. It’s not what he asked for. And yet—when Grayson’s hand brushes his elbow again, steadying him gently as they walk down the fire escape, Damian doesn’t pull away. His instincts are screaming at him to shake the touch off. That’s just sympathy. Just pity.

    It doesn’t mean anything.

    He is just a civilian, Damian reminds himself harshly, over and over like a mantra. He does not matter. His affection does not matter. He eked out his fortune and his revenge with every bloody punch and petty swindle and broken bone. He ignored the hiss and slap of the filthy water in the canals that wended through the city, the roar of the waves at the harbour that smashed boats to pieces, the sinuous curl of the mist on wet nights that got you jumped if you weren’t paying close enough attention. The Ketterdam water had a touch of the mocking about it– a determination to be as awful and monstrous and polluted as he was. But Kaz didn’t need a reminder of what he’d become. The water had his brother; it would not have him, too.
