When you’re pinned against the horizon, sun beating uselessly against your metal skin, the leather of your green apple turning your air funny, all you have is interminable moments of possibility. Life and death, made into string, stretches out in front of you: Tangible. For just a second, you can reach out and touch it, hold it against your gloved palm and feel your soul catch alight in understanding.

He noticed when the look on Lan Zhan’s face changed. As if something within him had shuddered back to life, painful and quick. Like slipping a knife between someone's ribs and twisting.
Then panic had him wrapped in it's cruel gelid grip. The space where Lan Wangji had been suddenly empty, a physical space inside Wei Wuxians chest suddenly carved away, gaping, hollow, then flooded with that same freezing terror.
He couldn't do this without him. He couldn't- He coudn't- air refused to slide down his throat. Refused to enter his lungs, or perhaps his lungs had been ripped from his being to make space for the cavity inside him. He couldn't breathe. He was going to- a blur of white and blue tumbled towards him like a god cast from the heavens, a star shot across the sky, fleeting and beautiful and sorrowing, and horror tore into him beside that panic as Lan Zhan came hurtling towards him.
He had stood so close to the ledge. Wei Wuxian had not been falling long. He was so close.
It was like he was on fire. He was burning up. He was frozen. He was closing in, and Wei Wuxian could do nothing to stop him.
(or: Wei Wuxian falls and Lan Wangji jumps. It changes everything.)

Wei Ying’s eyes fluttered, and she turned away. Forcing her body up and out of the bed. She felt like a flower fighting through the heaviness of snow. Trying to escape the cold, trying to reach the shy spring sun. It didn’t matter if this was a dream or something else. She was going to continue on as if it were real. If it wasn’t, and she wasted what could be her last time seeing Wei Ying… she didn't know how she'd cope with it. So she would cherish this, and then bear the consequences.
She didn't know what it would cost to have this time. She couldn't find it in her to care. It was selfish. But she was tired, and she'd already given so much. Wasn't she allowed to have this? Just for a moment. Just until her eyes were open again and she was stuck hurting and desperate, in that reality that was filled with fire and absent of her love. Was it so selfish for her to want to sleep?
She made her way back across the room to discard her boots, then quietly pulled a box of medical supplies off a shelf. She'd hungered for this in that way she rarely did. In that way the rules forbid. So she would cherish this until it was gone.
The notion was not unfamiliar.

Summary
The Swiss National League doesn’t care about the legendary Hollander-Rozanov rivalry. When the MLH can’t negotiate with the Hockey Players’ Union in time to prevent a hockey lockout at the start of the 2015 season, the Zürich Lions jump at the chance to sign both Shane and Ilya to short-term contracts. For four months in Switzerland, they share a team, a line, a house, and a bed.
Then the lockout ends in January, and it’s time to go back. Back to different countries, cities, lives. Beds.
