Liliya shrugs. It’s a coordinated move, just enough to let her slouchy sweater roll down one shoulder. Jane’s eyes dart to the newly-revealed skin. Gotcha. Liliya raises her chin, letting her hair shift behind her. Under her own roaring pulse in her ears, she can hear Jane swallow.

Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.
“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.
Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.
They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

The soothing feeling of it makes it very hard to focus, but Shane tries very hard to do it anyway. “I tried-we tried, but this can’t happen again.” It takes a moment, but Shane finally manages to make sense of the words, and he lets out a soft noise of understanding.
Ah. He’s apologizing that he won’t be able to see Shane in the hospital again before he leaves.
“I understand,” he says, and he does. It was probably really hard for Ilya to get here even once, and it can’t be very long before his plane leaves. He’s sad, of course–they didn’t even get to spend time together, really–but it’s not like this will be the last chance they ever have to see each other. He gives Ilya his best attempt at a smile, and if it comes out a little sad, too, all Ilya does is reach out to stroke the backs of his fingers gently over his cheek.

Summary
Ilya came home from Russia with his father buried and a terrible truth lodged like a piece of glass in his throat. He loves Shane Hollander. He can never have him. Not without making Shane sacrifice something big— too big to give up for the paltry offering of himself in return.
He plays the game with a lump in his stomach, heavy guilt warring with his heart’s anxious flutter every time Shane looks at him. Something fundamental has shifted between them. He’s not sure if it’s been this way since Shane came out to him in Tampa, and held him tight like he was trying to keep Ilya in one piece as he was shattering apart. Or maybe it was that phone call, Ilya shivering on the cold streets of Moscow, a frayed nerve, spilling his guts out on the sidewalk.
Either way, Ilya is going to end it. He has to end it.
