Or Jason finally visits his mother again and Barbara provides comfort as he reminisces about his childhood.

Summary
And when he thinks of Himeno, he cries. He sees the tailends of her smile from beyond a lighter’s glow and his chest feels like it’s being crushed. His own movement on the hospital bed mirrors hers when the night was too quiet to spend alone, just before she fell asleep holding him, and he has to stay very still if he doesn’t want to break into pieces. He thinks of Himeno and doesn’t remember a work partner, he thinks of Himeno and remembers everything.
In which Aki handles his grief over Himeno's death: by recalling their relationship throughout the years, acknowledging the way it was shaped by their complementary vices. And finally, finally— admitting how he feels about it all.

Summary
Calling Karlach blunt does her a disservice, Shadowheart knows. Karlach is honest, certainly, almost to a fault, and emphatic with it. But blunt implies accidental harm and blind carelessness. Over their time together, both fighting their way to the Absolute and in this more recent month of peace, Shadowheart has seen nothing but care from Karlach. She burns with grace - not grace as in elegance, though there is an adroit smoothness to her movements, the artful skill of one who knows her body so well it goes beyond thought. No, Karlach's grace is in her aching compassion, her bone-deep kindness. Honest, genuine, earnest, yes. But not blunt.
Shadowheart reminds herself of this, attempts to batter the fact of it back into her skull, as she stares at Karlach openmouthed across the campfire.
“You want me to what?” she manages.
“Hurt me,” Karlach says.
(Karlach and Shadowheart have a discussion about sadism and trauma, and then they sleep together about it. It’s nice.)

At another time in his life, Astarion would have stripped down and joined them, tossed himself headlong into a facade of pleasure and allowed them to burn away every thought left in his mind. He’d feel disgusting afterward, no doubt, but a decent half-hour of brainlessness was worth the price. Instead, he closes his eyes and folds his hands, gathering all his strength to speak up.
(Or: Astarion settles down for some quality entertainment after a difficult day, and Karlach is more than willing to let him direct the show.)

“It’s been a long time, hasn’t it?” Shadowheart’s breath is almost a whisper.
“Yeah. I hope it’s all muscle memory, y’know. Would hate to disappoint someone.” Karlach leans back then, the tension stretched thin between them.
A bead of sweat rolls down Shadowheart’s temple, her mouth feels dry, her wound aches. “When I gave up my memories I… gave up that part of myself too. I don’t remember what I even like.”
Karlach squints at her, as if she doesn’t believe her. Her sneer turns playful, and she drums her fingers on her crossed arm. “You just need someone to remind you, yeah?”

The pain is extraordinary. Vincent’s fangs tear through her flesh like a hot knife through butter, bringing up a well of fresh, bright blood. His eyes stay trained on hers as the first droplets sprinkle into his waiting mouth—but then her blood starts flowing in earnest, dripping down the sides of his face, staining the pillowcase underneath his head, and Vincent’s eyes close. The guttural moan he makes fills the empty room, raising goosebumps on Tifa’s skin, making her gasp.
He drinks from her like a parched man drinks from an oasis.
It was supposed to be a simple arrangement. Vincent would teach her how to strengthen her magic, and she, in turn, would let him drink her blood.
Tifa had no idea how it'd all gotten so damn complicated.

“You don’t need to keep an eye on me,” he blurts out, stiff. Cloud regrets it the moment it leaves his mouth, when he sees the little light remaining in Tifa’s gaze flicker and die.
“I see,” she whispers. Tifa draws her knees to her chest, only cold now that Cloud’s given her reason to be. “Sorry, Cloud. I’ll try to stop being so overbearing.”
He doesn’t know to put guilt and gratitude into words. Tifa has labored too hard for him. He’s been stumbling for months with her as his only lifeline, blinded by forged memories, urged forward by both a call to reunion and her light guiding him safely home. Ships go off course and veer into their lighthouses; Tifa has stared into the dark so long that it’s become an irremediable part of her.
Mideel wasn't the only time Tifa neglected herself to care for Cloud. She's been doing it since Midgar, since they started this journey. Tonight, however, Cloud wants to return the favor.
