If you told ten-year-old Natalie Scatorccio that she’d end up being best friends with Van Palmer, she’d probably look at you funny. Not because she can’t see that happening, but because that is her best friend, and you should probably go talk to five-year-old Natalie Scatorccio instead.
If you told ten-year-old Natalie Scatorccio that she'd end up having a big, fat, lesbian crush on, once again, Lottie fucking Matthews, and that she'd have to either get over her or get with her in two months, she'd probably pass away on the spot.
or: it’s the summer before college. nat and lottie refuse to talk or think about their evident feelings for one another, van thinks she might explode, and laura lee is probably a lesbian, but she has to be a counselor at bible camp so she doesn't really care about that right now.

Summary
Lottie Matthews has spent most of her life following a future someone else planned for her. Graduate from Columbia. Join the family company. Become exactly who everyone expects her to be. Then her father gives her one fully funded year before any of it has to begin, and Lottie decides she would rather spend it driving across the United States and Canada in a renovated shuttle bus, stopping at every national park she can find.
There is only one problem: she has no intention of going without Natalie.
Natalie knows how to take apart an engine and turn Lottie’s meticulously organized plans into something they might actually survive. What she does not know is how to accept a year with no job waiting, no permanent address, and no guarantee about what comes afterward. Still, Lottie drew her guitar into the plans before she ever asked. So they buy an ugly old bus, build themselves a home inside it, and leave New York with a map full of green circles, far too much camping equipment, and no idea who they will be by the time they come back.
OR
Lottie and Natalie spend a year getting lost in the wilderness, living in eighty square feet, and discovering that home has never had much to do with where they park.

Nat scoffs. “No.”
“C’mon, it’s fun.”
“I’ll stick to writing songs and not singing them.”
“Come on,” Lottie says, leaning over to nudge Nat’s shoulder. “Singing is a great way to let out pent up feelings.”
Nat nods, watching Van gesture towards the audience of tables filled with other drunk people cheering and singing along, Tai among them, watching with obvious heart eyes.
That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.
“I’m good.”
Lottie puts her glass down on the table, empty. “Suit yourself.”
