You've seen it. A fic formatted like a classified document. A chapter that looks like a real social media feed. An interactive game, somehow, inside an AO3 work. You clicked the kudos button. You thought: how.

This is the tutorial that answers that.

A beginner-friendly guide to HTML and CSS on AO3 — no prior coding experience required. By the end of this series, you'll know enough to write formatted fics, build your own workskins, style your entire AO3 interface, and maybe make something that makes other people stop and think how.

    Work Summary

From the moment the stranger had the audacity to steal his cardboard and claim his spot, Bob knew it was going to be a shit show. Now they were being chased by men in black tactical gear, their guns sleek and definitely not handed out by any government Bob had ever trusted, not that he trusted any to begin with. Something hissed past his ear and punched a hole through the concrete wall behind them. That was new.

“Why do they keep chasing us?!” the man shouted. “What did you do?!”

"Me?” Bob snarled, ducking low as a chunk of concrete whistled past his head. His eyes locked onto the shooter's weapon, risking a glance back. “You’re the one they want! You're Tony Stark!”

The man whipped his head toward him, wild-eyed, soot streaked across his face, and smoke curling from his hair. He looked one sharp breath away from hysteria. “Who the hell is that?! Do I owe him money?!”

Bob stared at him. Then at the flaming dumpster. Then back at him. “You’re fucking kidding me—”

Or, Bob woke up as a homeless teen with no memories and later on powers that wouldn't stop screaming for destruction. Also, the Avengers wouldn't leave him alone.

“No need for the death glare. I'm probably a very important guy who just ... temporarily misplaced his identity. It happens. Maybe I’m royalty. Or a spy. Or—ooh—Batman.”

    “You’re not Batman.”

“No. Right. I don’t feel particularly ... broody.” The man rubbed his temple, wincing. “I feel more like the type who’d fund Batman and then complain about the budget.”

    Work Summary

Before they were Captain America's Howling Commandos, they were just a bunch of guys in a cell together.

The Howlers as POWs and immediately after rescue.

    "C'mon, Sarge, be reasonable."

But Barnes just shook his head. "Been around sick people all the time—"

"Not another Steve story," Dugan muttered and rolled his eyes.

"—and it never lasts, even when I catch it from him." He barely got the words out before he began hacking again.

Satoru’s not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. He knows what happens in the future. He’s replayed it too many times to count. The goodbyes. The best years of his life. The time when all he had to worry about was the next mission piling up.

And now, Yuuji’s with him. A severely traumatized Yuuji, sure, but his beloved student nonetheless. Crying in his arms, because Yuuji killed his only family with his own two hands.

“Don’t worry,” Satoru tries to pat Yuuji’s head gently, reassuring the kid with soft words that seem all too wrong with his fourteen-year old voice. “Sensei will help you. That’s what teachers are for, right? It’s not your fault. Not at all.”
    ~
Or: Gojo and Yuuji travel back to 2003. They change a lot.

"He's smart," Satoru explains eloquently, pointing to a PowerPoint presentation with over-the-top fanciful gestures, doing whatever random sequence of waves and such that pops into his mind. The remote in his hand echoes an awfully clicking click of a click through the auditorium. "As you can see from Exhibit G, he shows the average intelligence for his age."

[Itadori Yuuji], the caption reads, writting in black Arial font, size twenty. [Cute. Smart. Observe.]

A cough. "And you think this is adequate enough to send him to Jujutsu High with you?"

Fucking fuck! This wasn’t real anyway. Even fake Bruce couldn’t leave shit alone.

“Whaddaya gonna do, Bruce? Hit me about it?”

He had to give it to the programmers. Their reactions were extremely realistic.
