They meet up with Jonathan and his new girlfriend around 2 and head for the Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney and dinner in the West Village, organized by Mike and Jonathan, but it’s exactly what Will would’ve planned for himself anyway. Will is so grateful that he is so known. That he’s never felt the way he did when he was a teenager, birthdays all but forgotten, again, and he never will.
They laugh, drink the top shelf liquor Will’s usually too frugal to order for himself (old habits die hard), and swap updates — Jonathan’s trip to Europe to visit his daughter on her study abroad semester and location scout for his next project, how Mike’s latest novel is going, the artist residency Will’s doing in the fall.
Surrounded by his big brother and his husband — his favourite people in the world, at both age 5 and 55, Will is exactly where he wants to be.

When Mike first filled out the paperwork, he didn’t know if anything would come of it. He’d just arrived back in Ithaca after a spring break visit to the city. His neck was stiff from the weird nap he’d taken on the bus. It was snowing, in April. He didn't even have any friends to call up and announce his return, unless you counted his roommate, Jeremy, who greeted him with an indifferent head nod and a “hey, man” when Mike spilled through the door of their dorm room, shaking melting snowflakes out of his overgrown hair.
He trudged across campus the next day, past dirty iced-over snow drifts that seemed like they might never melt, and knocked on the door of his advisor’s office.
“If I wanted to transfer to another school next year,” he said, fidgeting with his backpack in his lap as he sat down in the squeaky vinyl-backed chair, “how would that work?”

He’s perched on the worn down sofa in that same basement, drunkest he’d ever been in his life, putting a hand on his best friend’s knee, pushing into his personal space further and further, whispering is this okay? And he’s answering yes, just as uninhibited, and they’re kissing, messy and deep, and for a second it’s good, it’s so good, and then Will is crying, and when Mike wakes up the next morning with his head splitting in two, Will’s gone. Gone for New York City in his mom’s fully packed 1976 Ford Pinto, and Mike never even got the chance to say goodbye.
